Lap dog lament……

Oh, how I remember all the good times. The times when I had it all to myself to do with as I pleased, when I pleased. Yes, I may have taken it for granted, but I never suspected for a minute it would ever be anything but my lap.

All those tasteless TV dinners it hosted, the best-selling books it cradled, the children and grandchildren it comforted. Not to mention, dare I say it, those cuddles with my sweet wife. Oh, they were heady days indeed.

Alas, those moments now founder as ancient memories, vanished like figments of a fantasy long since played out. Lo, there’s a new “sheriff” in Lapland and she’s taking prisoners.

Little did I know when I first fell for that cute little furry face, I would be giving up any semblance of independence when it came to the use of my lap. Since day one of what is now referred to as “the Bella era”, my lap has been nothing short of nap fodder. With nary a moment to call its own, my lap’s sole duty now is to provide the nesting place for a living, breathing plush toy.

Whether sitting down at the keyboard, getting ready to watch a TV show, starting a good read, or just settling in for a nap of my own, it will only be a matter of seconds before my lap will have an uninvited attachment. Any fleeting thought I have of disengagement quickly melts away with one sad look from that adoring face. The actual count may be one-on-one, but psychologically speaking, I’m vastly outnumbered.

So I’m left with this lament and little recourse. But it could be worse. She could be on someone else’s lap. I’d really hate that!

    • What I neglected to say was she also runs our lives in every other way also. Amazing what attachments we form with dogs in our “golden ” years.

  1. Awww 🙂 Cutest invasion ever
I hope she stays that size, because even if she grows up into a 70 lb ball of fluff, you’ve set the stage for ‘no, I fit here’, no matter how thoroughly she cuts off circulation to your feet!

    • Thanks, Lexy. She is about 20 pounds now which is much bigger than the picture I post, but as you guessed, it doesn’t change her belief that my lap is sorely for her napping pleasure. And how did you know about the circulation problem? Me thinks thou hath beeneth there before.

  2. Just be grateful she is not a cat. Some cats are lovely lap cats, some are sharp!
Kittens ‘pudden’ their mums to get the milk flowing, ….it feels like a tiny (depending of course on the size of your cat!) deep muscle massage and cats do that to us when they sit down, just to get us at the right temperature i suspect. Mine used to leave her claws out! It was fine under the duvet, but through one layer of clothing she was sharp!!

Also, if I started typing on the computer she would climb off my lap onto the keyboard. I guess she was trying to help? Be grateful Bella doesn’t do that, or your posts would make even less sense!

    • Yes, I’ve been “kneaded” by a few cats in my time too. Bella doesn’t do that, of course, she just pushes me around until she has more than half of the chair.

Still laughing at your last comment, You have an awesome sense of humor! Guess that’s why I like you so much.

    • I’m sure Miss Buffy has no concern whether it’s a “home” or “away” game, as long as the lap is comfortable (and aren’t they all).

  3. I have the same prob with my cat Kitty.as soon as I sit down she is there. I would not.mind sharing your Bella. She can sit on my.lap anytimebxxxx

Your turn to write, but please don't be wittier than me. My ego is quite fragile.
