I don’t believe for a second that dogs have “instinct” about what time of day it is. No, I’m telling you, dogs can read clocks.
How do I know this? I thought you’d never ask. I know this because our dogs get me up at exactly 6:00am every morning to go out. When I come back to bed, they start pawing at me at incisively at 7:15am for breakfast. They start staring and whining at us at 5:00pm, on the nose, every evening for dinner. Then at precisely 8:00pm, I get that “go get the leashes, we’re ready for our walk look.
I mean, if it were instinct, it would be “around” 6:00 or 7:15 or 5:00 or 8:00. But there are no 5:55s or 6:02s or 7:16s or 5:05s or 7:59s. They’re dead on the dot, time wise. Heck, the people who keep the atomic clock in Boulder, Colorado should call me whenever they need to calibrate their clock.
I always felt that instinct was an over-rated sense.

Woody and Wilson are exactly the same. In winter they get fed at 5pm, and when the clocks spring forward every March, we have to then feed them at 4pm as they will not tolerate a one hour wait!
Woody doesn’t always go to work with Peter, but since it’s Peter that normally feeds them, I can tell that it’s exactly 4pm as he goes and waits by the front door. Always dead on time at 4pm! 🙂
They are adorable! I remember my dog used to start barking at 5am to let me know it morning and his milk time.
Always started making noise for his walk time, dinner time and then i used to see time and used to be surprised, haha. They are very intelligent caring and loving!

What we have here is a human who won’t cooperate…..It would be ‘I want a saucer of milk’ time at our house….Yes, of course they tell time.
It is a good thing they don’t read too. They might like that saucer of milk idea.
I might have said “Walkies please” or even where’s our meal but what I can certainly tell you is they have you on a tight leash, and I can see they are a joy to be with 🙂
Yes, Peter, this is new territory for me. I’ve never been “owned” before. But to their credit they are good owners and even let me have a treat now and then.
I assume that’s not YOUR bed, so dinner or walk time? I don’t know about reading the clock and telling time, but I’m pretty sure they’ve got your number!

Oh my gosh. Well it would be one of those four times….but it looks like a “please give us a walk” stare. Maybe early evening? Did you say 8pm? I don’t have your post in front of me, so I’ve already forgotten. For sure they have a better memory than mine.

Looks like either it’s dinner time or walk time. My dogs are the same, except we have one dog that plays us against one another. If I come home at a different time from hubby, she barks and whines and cries for her supper even though I know that her “Dad,” already fed her. The other night when she saw me coming up the driveway, she ran to her food bowl and tried to bolt the whole thing down before I got there so I’d give her some more.

Oh, you don’t have to convince me, Al. I found it especially creepy when Scrappy kept to the exact same time schedule even after we switched to daylight savings time. I’m not kidding. We took our walk at 3:00 the day before and the day after daylight savings time. He sat in front of me and gave me “the look.” 😉
